Chapter Twelve
Adam cursed softly as he walked down the steps of Wiston House. After all his noble resolutions to be Lady Melissaâs Galahad, to force her to join the rest of the human race and not lock herself away like a nun any more as well, following her to that window to say a private farewell out of earshot of Wistonâs butler was his latest mistake in a long line of them since he met her and wanted everything he couldnât have from a single lady of such impeccable birth and stunning looks.
Today he had watched her turn her head and try not to care if he was still there or not. It woke up all his inner devils and got him over there, standing behind her as if he still had some right to her sensual curiosity about him as a lover before his brain could stop him. Then he had kissed her like the brash, entitled fool he was before he lost his looks and his best friend. And now he was rigid with wanting her, and if he didnât change the subject every fool in London with the courage to look at him would see for themselves he was rampant and aching with it.
Fighting for enough strength of purpose to find ice and glaciers in his imagination, he limped through the back lanes and past the mews he was beginning to know so well, ignoring surprised looks from anyone unused to seeing a finely dressed gentleman storming along as if he had a dozen devils on his tail.
âI am not to be disturbed,â he informed an equally surprised footman when he strode in through the side door of his own house and slammed the concealed door to his library shut behind him.
At last he could pace in peace and be as hotly frustrated and needy as he chose. He locked the outer door in case Belle or his grandmother came to tell him something they thought he ought to know and found him too aroused to hide it. When he recalled the feel of Melissaâs fine skin under his lips, the temptation of her slender neck and the tremble that went down her backbone when his mouth whispered over her nape soft as butterfly wings, he went as hard as granite.
How he had needed her, longed to seize and take and slake this endless, torturous needâwith a houseful of servants and her father only a few yards away. Heâd had to bolt, then stamp away to hide himself here for the shame of wanting her so urgently, like the monster in an ancient legend concealing his obsession from the gods.
âWhy the devil did you leave her that note, Lathbury?â he demanded out loud as he limped up and down, cursing his last ridiculous words to her when he ought to have known he wasnât capable of being the noble knight who rescued the lady from her dragons so she could run to another man the moment she was free again.
